Great Pulteney Street was commissioned by Sir William Pulteney and completed in 1789. No 53 and No 54 have served as domestic homes, long term lodgings and as a school. In 1919 the two properties were first combined into a private hotel, St Monica’s. In 1985 the name was changed to Dukes Hotel, in honour of His Grace the Duke of Clevedon.
Dukes operated as a full service hotel through until 2012 when the current owners purchased the property and repositioned these magnificent townhouses as an informal + boutique guest house. Now known more simply as ‘Dukes’ or ‘Dukes of Bath’ the reputation and emphasis on service and unforced hospitality, towards all guests, will continue to rest at the heart of this wonderful property.
We offer an assortment of five rooms on a bed and breakfast basis.
Our two Snug doubles, more contemporary in style, are tucked beneath the Georgian mansard roof, accessed via six flights of stairs. These ‘cosy’ bedrooms offer, three sided bed access, writing table, storage and a chair with en-suite shower facilities. These are our functional rooms, fit for purpose and with an emphasis on value for money. Most suitable for an overnight stay whilst on a shopping trip to Bath, a ‘stop over’ for the Rugby; horse racing or a peaceful sanctuary in preparation for a business meeting. The rooms offer restricted views of ‘Mary Poppins’ chimney pots. With access to all guest house facilities these rooms are ideal for one person or a happy, relaxed couple.
Comfortably proportioned, with large sashed windows, we have three, well appointed standards on offer. Two are south facing overlooking the quiet, well stocked courtyard garden. A third room has views over Great Pulteney Street. All three rooms have the convenience of an en-suite shower with the Abercorn on the ground floor offering greatest accessibility (suitable for guests with limited mobility). We will allocate to you the best room available at the time of reservation.
These more generously proportioned rooms offer greater comfort with the addition of arm chairs and writing desks. Whether it be for Valentines or a mid week treat, these rooms rarely disappoint.
In a by gone era these would be considered to be a classic suite with a separate ‘sitting room’ accessed via a internal door way. A rather special birthday celebration or an important anniversary may be a fitting prompt.
These rooms, at over 300 square feet are truly generous in their proportion. Each contains a four poster bed and exudes a classical Georgian elegance. These rooms offer up a unique patina charting the past eras of history.
Please note - whilst our floorboards may creak and our sash windows may rattle we guarantee you a very hospitable welcome. We will tend you with natural, unforced service and encourage a memorable stay in possibly one of the most elegant and historically pleasing private guest houses in Bath. We offer a no quibble guarantee, we treasure your visit and our dedicated and professional team welcome guests back year after year.

Georgian Town house - Luggage and Wireless Internet
For many years the benefit of introducing a lift has been discussed and considered, unfortunately our Grade 1 listing is now rather restrictive. We will not hesitate to help carry your luggage, however we welcome your patience and consideration.
Wireless Internet - Guaranteed in the spacious airy, guest drawing room. Available after considerable investment in most of the bedrooms - however massively thick Bath stone walls and Grade 1 listing restrictions preclude perfect reception in all of the rooms. Please make sure your needs are known at the time of booking.
