Stay in Bath and Visit A Bookshop
31 October 2017
Staying in Bath? Love reading? Why not visit a bookshop (or few) while you’re here? Bath is well stocked with booksellers. In fact it even has the marks from reading retreats from the past still on its walls (opposite Waterstones is still visible the sign advertising a circulating library of years gone by).
Bath has, of course, its own large branch of Waterstones and a WHSmith, but while you’re here, why not explore a few of Bath’s wonderful independent booksellers?
There’s Mr B’s Reading Emporium on John Street (just behind Jolly’s department store and very close to The Raven pub (well-worth a visit in its own right!)). Mr B’s offers its patrons the personal touch, as well as literary artistic displays like its claw-foot bath book display or its stairwell wall covered in old Tin Tin cartoons! They’ve twice been named the UK’s best independent bookshop and are masters in suggesting books you’ll love but would never have found on your own.
Then on The Paragon there’s Toppings & Company Booksellers who can boast of an impressive selection of signed editions within their shelves. This month they’re pleased to have signed J.K. Rowling, Richard Dawkins, Tom Hanks and Ali Smith books (to name but a few). They’re also super friendly and happy to offer refreshments to you while you browse.
Bath’s independent booksellers are also top-notch when it comes to hosting literary events. These are just two of the amazing events taking place in the next week or two.
4th November – Philip Pullman – Toppings & Company Booksellers
Sure to be a huge event, this one isn’t taking place in Toppings bookshop, but in Komedia on Westgate Street.
Philip Pullman, having just released his long-awaited prequel to the ‘His Dark Materials’ series, is in Bath to talk about his other new book; ‘Daemon Voices’. This is his new collection of essays, which reflect a lifetime of writing, with each curated story a mediataion on the power and importance of storytelling. (Although we’ll be very surprised if he doesn’t also touch on the prequel ‘La Belle Sauvage’ too).
The event starts at 12:30pm at Komedia and tickets are either £20 (which includes a £20 voucher redeemable against the price of Daemon Voices), or £40 (which includes a £20 voucher redeemable against the price of Daemon Voices and La Belle Sauvage).
7th November– Jen Campbell – Mr B’s Reading Emporium
Jen Campbell is the genius behind ‘Weird Things Customers Say In Bookshops’, but in this event she’ll be talking about her new book ‘The Beginning if the World in the Middle of the Night’; which is a collection of modern whimsical fairytales balanced with dark subjects.
She’ll be looking at the history of fairy tales and why they are still so influential in literature today, and joining guests as they eat delicious food prepared by someone local and foodie, and taking time to compare bookselling notes over a glass of wine or two!
Tickets include delicious food and drink, author interview and book signing and 15% off all books on the night - we’re making a list of books to get already!
The event starts at 7pm at the bookshop and tickets cost £14 each (or £25 for two).
