Get into the Festive Spirit with a Stay in Bath
8 December 2020

Bath has well and truly entered into the festive spirit now. With a plethora of festive light displays, a pop-up market to explore, and the reopening of some of our favourite Bath attractions (Bath Theatre Royal and the Roman Baths to name only two), we're delighted to be welcoming guests back to Dukes Hotel and to Christmas in Bath.

As anyone who's been to Bath at this time of year knows, the Bath Christmas Market would normally be in residence around the city now. Although complications around the Covid situation have led to this year's market being unable to take place, that hasn't stopped the local independent makers completely. Each weekend, Abbey Green and Bath Abbey Courtyard are becoming home to a select contingent of artisans. The stalls are fewer (which means they can be spaced safely apart for social distancing), but there's plenty to see. From jewellery to homewares, and from clothes to specialist foods, we're able to support small businesses while Christmas shopping for everyone in a festive setting. Add to that some excellent buskers performing Christmas songs and we've got the ideal afternoon out.

When evening comes, we wrap up warm and head out to enjoy some of the Christmas light displays. Right on our doorstep we have the Bath Illuminated Trail. Iconic buildings such as our neighbours the Holburne Museum and Bath's famous abbey are being lit up in artistic ways to make for a beautiful evening walk. The lit locations are spread across the whole city, with the full trail listed online and fully downloadable (https://www.welcometobath.co.uk/christmas-light-trail/). On a related note, we're glad to see that Bath's adventure golf is once more doing their illuminated golf this year. Definitely a fun (easily socially distanced) evening out.

As well as Bath's own light trail, there are also quite a few nearby light trails to enjoy. Some of our favourites are:

Stourhead's light trail
Stourhead is a short drive from Bath and it's grounds at any time of year are a joy to walk through. Lit up at Christmas, they're on a whole other level!
Bookings can be made here: https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/stourhead/features/christmas-at-stourhead-2020

Westonbirt's Enchanted Christmas
Westonbirt National Arboretum has an annual Christmas lights trail/Christmas festivities, and this year it's just as beautiful as last year. The light installations include smoke rings, disco balls, light and music combinations, and stalls selling roasted chestnuts, hot chocolate, and other seasonal treats around the trail.
Tickets are limited, so if you don't manage to book tickets for this year, definitely make a note to book some next year!

Longleat Land of Light
The grounds and gardens of Longleat have a new Christmas light event this year. Running from 3rd December to January 10th, there's a lot to see and do:
"A myriad of magical light installations will emerge across Longleat in seventeen unique zones. In the Land of Light, you can discover motion-detected splashes of playful colour and movement and immerse yourselves in enveloping blankets of soft, synchronised light and sound."
Tickets are available here: https://www.longleat.co.uk/whats-on/land-of-light-2020

With so much to see and do, Christmas has certainly come to stay in Bath. We hope that you might come to stay in Bath too, and let all of us at Dukes Hotel get you into the festive spirit.
