Visiting Bath - A Margaret Atwood “The Testaments” Event
30 August 2019

“And so I step up, into the darkness within; or else the light.”

If you have been watching the TV series, and/or have read and loved Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, then this upcoming event in Bath is one to add to your diary.

On September 9th, at Bath’s Waterstones, there will be a special launch event to celebrate the release of the next instalment of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale; The Testaments, which is due for release on the tenth of September.

It may be thirty-four years sinceThe Handmaid’s Tale was read by its first readers, but at last we can discover what happened to its heroine, Offred. It’s been a long time, but a curiosity for Offred, and love of this book, hasn’t faded. As such, Waterstones in Bath are calling on writers, poets, spoken-word artists and performers to submit their pieces for the special (free) launch event.

The pieces must be on the theme of dystopia, feminism and The Handmaid’s Tale‘s legacy, and must be piece no longer than 1000 words or five minutes long. From the list of submitted works compiled by the Waterstones team, the audience will vote for their preferred piece and the winner will leave the evening with a gift card and a free copy of The Testaments.

As well as some wonderful writing, the event will have celebratory drinks, plenty of fan enthusiasm, and give you the opportunity to enjoy time in a bookshop after-hours (a real treat for many bookworms!).

The real plus of the event for avid fans is that it will let Atwood fans purchase the brand new The Testamentsat the stroke of midnight, but for us, a big draw, at least in our minds, is the chance to enjoy an evening of unique readings. As well as great writing, there are sure to be some surprises (we’re curious to see what any “performers” create).

To reserve a free place at the event, and for more information on the event, you can visit: waterstones.com/events/margaret-atwoods-the-testaments-launch-evening/bath

On a final note, if you want to submit your work for reading at the event, it can be emailed to [email protected] until the 3rd of September.
